The News-Sun continues to be Highlands County’s best source for information
and has been since 1928.
The newspaper as it is today is the result of many name changes and merges
that have taken place through the years. Today’s News-Sun is the result of a
merger of the Avon Park Sun and Sebring News, completed in 1997.
The first newspaper to be published in Sebring was also called the Sebring
News. One issue – that of August 1912 – was officially documented. The
newspaper has also been called the Sebring Recorder, Sebring White Way,
Sebring American, Highlands American and Highlands County News.
Other newspapers have been noted in Sebring’s history, but the News-Sun has been the longest standing provider of local news.
The newspaper was owned by individuals in its earliest days. In 1971,
General Newspapers and then the New York Times Co. bought the Avon Park Sun
and Sebring News.
The Sunday edition was added in 1982 and the Friday edition was brought on
in 1996, bringing the merger of the two newspapers to completion.
Better Built Newspapers bought the newspaper in 2000 and in 2004, the
current owner, HarborPoint Media, bought the property.
Romona Washington, who started working at the newspaper as a typesetter and
in circulation in 1980, was promoted to publisher and executive editor of
the newspaper in August 2009.
As it has done through the years, the News-Sun continues to partner with the
community in programs and special projects. It's heart is Highlands County.
This is not just our workplace, but it is our home.
